A 15-year-old girl accuses the son of the famous journalist Sheikh Yérim Seck of raping her. The young man is suspected of having sent a video of facts. Sheikh Yérim Seck has finally postponed his press conference scheduled for Monday. A case that revives the debate around a taboo.

“No to impunity” is the slogan for Internet users who forward #JusticePourLouise. The 15-year-old girl and the 19-year-old are both educated at the French high school in Saly, on the Petite Côte, south of Dakar.

“Louise”, whose real first name has been changed, accuses the son of Sheikh Yérim Seck – a well-known journalist in Senegal – of raping her, outside the school, filming the scene and distributing it to private couriers. Facts go back to May.

The young girl was heard from confirming sources at the Mbour police station. After the video was released, the school also reported to the police. The file was then sent to the Mbour prosecutor’s office.

For Aminata Mbengue, a psychologist and feminist activist, “the affair is long-lasting”, and some would try to “suffocate it”. For her, the law that criminalized rape, issued last year, “has not changed anything”: convictions are still too rare and too light.

For her part, Sheikh Yérim Seck, whose son is involved, would speak on Monday. He finally gave it up without announcing a new date. His entourage indicates that the case is in the initial investigation and recalls the principle of the presumption of innocence.
