the government reacts to ACHPR’s decision on constitutional reform

After days of silence, the Benin government is responding to the latest ruling by the African Court of Human Rights. On Friday, ACHPR called for the repeal of the constitutional reform in November last year and demanded a return to the 1990 text.

A decision that follows several unfavorable judgments from this court against Patrice Talon’s power. Once again, he denies the hypocrisy of the judges, the interference in the country’s sovereignty, while in April Benin withdrew from the Additional Protocol, which allowed for an individual referral to the court by Benin citizens.

The revision of our constitution is a parliamentary initiative approved by the unanimity of the people’s representatives. It is this constitution that strengthens our democracy that we want to question through a decision that borders on heresy and that the Benin people, sovereign, cannot give a side to. So many progresses that make it possible to strengthen our democracy, the results of which we can not consider have been questioned or even withdrawn.
