In a significant political development, the parliament has ratified contentious constitutional reforms that enhance the authority of lawmakers while curtailing the president’s powers, further intensifying the ongoing discord between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and parliamentary Speaker Ousmane Sonko.
The government intends to put these reforms to a national referendum. Key changes include bolstering parliamentary oversight, establishing a new Constitutional Court, and instituting a ban on sitting presidents from heading a political party.
