Senegal extends vaccination to everybody

Following the priority goals, vaccination against Covid-19 has been extended to everyone who presents to the various health centers. As of March 27, 225,309 people have been vaccinated across the country since the campaign began on February 23. While the country has received just over 700,000 doses in total, the question then arises of a future shortage of stock.

The national stocks of the Department of Prevention and Supply Pharmacy are empty. All doses of Sinopharm and AstraZeneca vaccines were distributed in cold rooms in the Senegalese regions.

The priority targets remain people over the age of 60, those with comorbidities, as well as healthcare professionals. Which represents about 20% of the population.

But vaccination has also been extended to anyone who wants to be vaccinated “within the limits of available doses and whether priority people have already been vaccinated or have not presented themselves,” specifies Ousseynou Badiane, coordinator of the vaccination program. “We did not think it was necessary to make too many restrictions as the disease continues to spread,” he explains.

Senegal has not yet run out of stock, but it expects one million doses of AstraZeneca as part of the global Covax initiative in May. And President Macky Sall announced that 3.9 million Johnson & Johnson vaccines have been ordered in hopes of getting them by the end of April.
