disappearance of one Yoruba activist after another

In Nigeria, a demonstration in favor of the creation of a “Yoruba” nation was brutally spread in Lagos on Saturday, July 3. It was activist Sunday Igboho – known for his speeches encouraging ethnic hatred of Fulani shepherds – who called on his supporters to meet in the Nigerian economic capital. But the activist was the target of a raid two days ago by Nigerian security services at his home in Ibadan on Thursday and has since been reported missing.

as reported from Abuja, Liza Fabbian

Only a handful of protesters found the courage to take to the streets to ask the authorities to “leave Igboho alone on Sunday”. According to Nigerian media present at the scene, the police intervened with tear gas and even fired live ammunition in the Ojota district where this peaceful gathering took place.

The Nigerian authorities want to be uncomplicated, as segregation talks are intensifying in southeastern and southwestern Nigeria. At dawn on Thursday, a team from the Nigerian Ministry of Security raided Igboho’s home in Ibadan on Sunday.

Following a heated exchange of fire with the guards, Nigerian security forces arrested 13 people and seized an arsenal consisting of several shotguns and Kalashnikovs. As for Sunday Igboho, he was able to escape and he is now “wanted” by the Nigerian authorities.

Impossible after this episode not to make the parallel with the attack on the chef’s house pro-Biafra independence activist Nnamdi Kanu 2017. He then fled and left Nigeria, where he was forcibly returned a week ago, under still dark circumstances. He will face charges of terrorism in late July in Abuja.
