choose between anxiety and impatience before the results are announced

Two days after the double presidential and legislative elections in Burkina Faso, the Electoral Commission resumed the municipality’s joint announcement of the results. An audience disputed by the opposition. Which led to a display of election tensions. A situation that Burkinabè follows closely, especially in Ouagadougou.

From our special correspondent in Ouagadougou,

“The crisis after the election” was launched on Monday night on the sets of the largest television channels in the country. And this Tuesday, it’s the newspapers that come back to the front page opposition warningand over the disagreements that divide the Electoral Commission. However, there are no signs of tension on the streets of Ouagadougou. Life has resumed, the posters have almost disappeared from the walls and the entertainment is the same as every Tuesday.

At City Hall in the 4th arrondissement, there are still ballot boxes from empty polling stations and drawers that served as booths. In the corridors, everyone goes to their business. This period after the election, however, quickly invites to talks. And for some like Awa, the situation is quite worrying: “They say there are scams. If that’s the case, we will not have reliable results and people may rise up, it could cause harm. ‘

For Edmond, a 27-year-old breeder, this is really the biggest risk: “We want results that are accepted by everyone, otherwise it will create crises and complications. I’m afraid the people will take to the streets. He must resolve this between them. “

“The more tension there is, the more uncertainty there is”

Oumarou is a student. He is 25 years old and on Sunday he even held a polling station. What he does not like is this expectation: “We waited for the results to move on. The longer it lasts, the more tension and the more uncertainty. “

At the end of the afternoon on the terrace of a café in the city center, in front of the National Theater, the presidential election is at the center of the discussions. “I, I did not want to fight,” Maxime explains, “we just want peace.” An observation shared by Madi sitting next to him. For him, the absence of some of the members of Ceni, the so-called opposition who withdrew their participation during the day, is obviously not good. “It bothers the same, it bothers. There are already complaints, that means there is a lack of clarity somewhere and it is not very interesting.”

“We call them to come to an agreement before the fire takes the house”

Ceni therefore announced that it would continue its work with ten Commissioners instead of restarting the validation process for the results that have been interrupted since Monday afternoon. Oumarou, an artist working in the theater opposite, follows this situation with concern. He truly believes that this expectation after the election is a crucial period: “It is in small details that wars in Africa are born of elections. Instead of continuing to work at 10 o’clock, they should have found agreement because all politicians are wrong. They are the ones who created the problem and they are the ones who will be firefighters later. As we do not want to be their victim, we urge them to come to an agreement before the fire takes the house. ”

A little further on on the same café terrace, Daouda delays. For him, there is no reason why we should not return to consensus: “For the irregularities noted, these are technical issues and that in the political consensus, I think they can find a compromise… So I, I am not worried about that. ”

All are suspended from the announcement of the results and the publication drop by drop by CENI.
