South Africa is again confronting a familiar and volatile flashpoint: since April, a run of anti-immigration protests has spilled into attacks targeting foreign workers, as jobless rates remain above 30% and frustrated residents accuse other Africans of taking employment opportunities.
For years, the country has drawn both documented and undocumented workers from across the continent, but it has also endured repeated surges of xenophobic violence since 2008, with critics arguing that authorities have not taken a sufficiently tough approach.
