the former boss of the bosses, Ali Haddad, sentenced to 12 years in prison on appeal

In Algeria, the court of appeal on Tuesday, November 3, ruled on Ali Haddad’s fate, embroiled in a corruption case. The former head of Algerian bosses had already been tried in July 2020, but had appealed his conviction. A new verdict was therefore expected and turned out to be milder than at first instance.

Twelve years in prison and a fine of eight million dinars. The verdict is heavy for Ali Haddad, founder of ETRHB, the first private construction company in Algeria, and former president of FCE, the Algerian employers’ organization.

The Court of Appeal in Algiers on Tuesday, November 3, confirmed the businessman’s guilt for many charges, including abuse of office, conflict of interest, corruption in the conclusion of public contracts or even waste of public funds.

The sentence is still milder than at first instance. In early July, this former relative of Abdelaziz Bouteflika was sentenced to eighteen years in prison and a fine of eight million dinars. All his property had been seized and his bank accounts frozen.

During this appeal, the public prosecutor requested a hardening of his sentence. But the requisition was not heard as the sentence was reduced by six years. Some of his property will also be returned to him.

Two former Algerian prime ministers were also on the quay. Abdelmalek Sellal and Ahmed Ouyahia were finally sentenced to eight years in prison against twelve in the first instance.
