In Libya, the Presidential Council is powerless to meet

Several high-level security rallies took place on Monday, June 14, in Tripoli to try to end the clashes that have taken place since Thursday in Ajaylat, a city 90 kilometers west of the Libyan capital.

The clashes left eight victims, including civilians. The Presidency, the authority leading the armed forces and security forces in Libya, called for an immediate ceasefire under threat of intervention.

Despite the warning from the power in Tripoli, dozens of military vehicles belonging to Zawiya’s militia went on Monday against the city of Ajaylat, dominated by another local militia. The situation is still very tense. It is not known what triggered the conflicts that have lasted for five days. The Ajaylat militia was also reinforced.

Heavy weapons

The fighting has driven dozens of families from central Ajaylat. The military used heavy weapons and shells fell on the market and on the houses. Shops have been looted and burned. People have been kidnapped.

The Presidential Council is once again confronted with its powerlessness in the face of the power of the militias that take part in battles when their interests collide. The militias andthe mercenaries are the two biggest challenges for the interim executive, who promised the Libyans, in March, after his inauguration, peace, security and stability.
