Algiers proposes European Parliament resolution

It is a text that does not pass. The Algerian authorities sharply criticize a European Parliament resolution adopted on Thursday, 26 November, which in particular denies “the deterioration of the human rights situation in Algeria”. The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns interference in the country’s internal affairs.

It is a resolution adopted in “urgency”, on Thursday, by parliamentarians, which is the basis for Algiers’ anger. In this text, MEPs strongly condemn the escalation of illegal and arbitrary arrests and detentions, as well as the “judicial harassment” of journalists, human rights defenders and lawyers in Algeria.

MPs also express concern for journalist Khaled Drareni, who is serving a two-year prison sentence, for covering a march of Hirak’s protest movement earlier this year 2020.

Members also point to several laws on manslaughter and call on the authorities to guarantee the right of all Algerians to participate in the democratic process.

“Scandalous content”

Algiers condemns the “outrageous content” of this resolution and considers it a “series of insults and insults against the Algerian people and their institutions”, we can read in a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Algerian power throws a text colored with “paternalism” in short, a “gross and impermissible” interference in its internal affairs. Such a resolution “can only damage Algeria’s relations with its partners”, the statement concluded.
