AfDB Secures ‘Deal of the Year’ for Egypt’s Major Wind Power Initiative

AfDB clinches 'Infrastructure deal of the year' for Africa’s largest wind power project in Egypt

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has recently been awarded the prestigious “Infrastructure Deal of the Year” title for 2025 by The African Banker Awards. This accolade honors the Bank’s pivotal role in financing the landmark 1.1 GW Suez Wind Power Project in Egypt, the largest wind energy initiative on the African continent to date.

The announcement came during the African Development Bank Group’s Annual Meetings in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, poignantly underscoring the institution’s leadership and its innovative financing strategies. By mobilizing an impressive $140 million towards the total project cost of $1.04 billion, the AfDB has fortified its standing as a key player in sustainable development financing.

Situated in the Gulf of Suez, this groundbreaking project is being developed by Suez Wind Energy S.A.E., a specially formed vehicle composed of ACWA Power and HAU Energy B.V. They are supported by a consortium that also includes major players like Hassan Allam Utilities, Meridiam, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), along with equity partners such as the Oman Investment Authority and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt. It’s truly remarkable to see such a diverse array of stakeholders come together with a shared vision.

The wind farm will proudly feature 138 Envision turbines, each boasting an 8 MW capacity. This marks the introduction of this state-of-the-art wind technology to Africa and stands as a testament to the continent’s growing expertise in renewable energy. It makes one ponder: what other technological innovations lie on the horizon for Africa?

“The Suez 1.1 GW Wind Power Plant Project stands as a powerful example of what national commitment and strong partnerships can achieve. As the largest wind energy project in Egypt and one of the largest in Africa, it reflects the strength of Egypt’s Country Platform under the NWFE program’s energy pillar,” stated Rania A. Al-Mashat, Egypt’s Minister of Planning, Economic Development & International Cooperation. Her words encapsulate the spirit of collaboration and determination that is vital for such transformative projects.

Slated for operational status by 2027, the Suez Wind Farm is projected to generate an estimated 4,111 GWh of clean electricity each year. To put that into perspective, this amount of electricity could power over one million households, demonstrating the project’s vast potential for enhancing energy access.

Furthermore, the project is set to have a substantial positive impact on the environment, with a projected annual reduction of around 1.71 million tons of CO₂ emissions. Can you imagine the ripple effect this could have on global warming trends in the coming decades?

Beyond its ecological advantages, the Suez Wind Power Project promises to create 1,425 full-time positions and another 315 part-time roles throughout its construction phase. This focus on employment, particularly among youth and women, hails an important step towards fostering inclusivity in the job market. By creating pathways for underrepresented groups, the project not only contributes to economic growth but also nurtures a more equitable society. It’s an imperative we should all consider: how can we foster sustainable economic opportunities while ensuring that no one gets left behind?

The Suez Wind Power Project is more than just an energy project. It’s a harbinger of change, a symbol of progress, and a beacon of hope for renewable energy aspirations throughout the continent. The collaborative efforts of various stakeholders not only highlight the importance of partnership but also serve as a reminder: genuine commitment can lead to extraordinary results.

As we move forward, let’s remain attentive to the steps we can take to support such transformative initiatives. In a world facing climate change challenges, renewable energy projects like the Suez Wind Power Plant aren’t just beneficial—they’re essential. They present a blueprint for other nations aspiring to harness their natural resources while promoting sustainable development.

The journey towards a sustainable energy future may be long and fraught with challenges, but with dedication and collaboration, the possibilities are endless. The Suez Wind Power Project stands as a testament to what can be achieved when we unite towards a common goal: a greener, more sustainable planet.

As this project unfolds, we should all keep an eye on its progress. What innovations will emerge? How will it shape the landscapes of both Egypt and Africa as a whole? Only time will reveal the answers, but for now, we can celebrate this monumental achievement.
