a new step towards a comprehensive peace following a meeting between Hemeti and al-Hilu

Number 2 of the Sovereign Transitional Council, General Hemeti, met in Juba, South Sudan, the leader of one of the country’s most important uprisings, Abdelaziz al-Hilu. The latter was not a signatory to the peace treaty signed on 3 October.

General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as “Hemeti”, wore a civilian costume on Thursday in Juba, a purple shirt and a tie, while usually wearing the sand-colored uniform of his rapid support forces instead. But this time the occasion was special.

Abdelaziz al-Hilu agreed to seek an agreement

Under the auspices of South Sudanese mediation, Hemeti actually spoke in person with Abdelaziz al-Hilu and then held a quick press conference by his side to say that both worked to “unblock the situation and restore confidence”. Abdelaziz al-Hilu had previously left the talks between Khartoum and the rebel groups in August, denying the leadership of the same Hemeti at the head of the Sudanese delegation because of “his crimes in Darfur and in the Nuba mountains”.

But the situation has now changed. Abdelaziz al-Hilu has agreed with Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok to seek an agreement. He said his meeting with Hemeti had been “friendly and positive”, but without adding much else. As for Hemeti, he would turn around.

“What happened between us has moved away like a summer cloud,” he even dictated during the press briefing. He eventually called to join them, the other was absent Juba agreements, Darfuri Abdelwahid al-Nur, still resilient to negotiations.
