The Ethiopian parliament declares Tigray’s parliament and regional executive illegal

In Ethiopia, fighting continues on Saturday in the province of Tigray, 700 kilometers north of the capital Addis Ababa. The federal army has launched an offensive there since Wednesday to regain control of the province, which is trying to secede. Parliament officially abolished the Tigray authorities on Saturday morning.

as reported from Addis-Adeba, Noé Rochet-Bodin

The Federation Council, the Ethiopian Senate, met in an extra session on Saturday morning and approved a resolution to establish a transitional government in Tigray.

Specifically, this decision means that Parliament will suspend the provincial authorities in Tigray. As a reminder, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed qualifies the TPLF party and the Tigrayan authorities as illegal since vote held in September despite the national ban. All relations between Tigray and Parliament have ended a month ago until today.

A symbolic decision

In fact, this parliamentary decision does not change much to the current situation. Because Mekelle, the provincial capital, is still in the hands of the TPLF, that is, the Tigray authorities. Rather, it is a way to legislate and prepare for the next move, in the event that Mekele is taken by the federal troops.

For this, Abiy Ahmed does not compromise. The former winner of the Nobel Peace Prize announced yesterday to carry out airstrikes in the region.
