The Arab League’s foreign ministers gathered in Doha, Qatar on Tuesday for an extraordinary summit. In addition to the summit, a meeting was held, at the request of Sudan and Egypt, on the great Ethiopian Renaissance dam, the second filling phase of which will begin next month. And the member states have spoken unanimously in support of Khartoum and Cairo and for UN intervention.
“There is a unanimous Arab position” on Ethiopian Great Renaissance Pond. “Gradual step-by-step” measures must be taken to support Egypt and Sudan in this matter. But Ethiopia, which is therefore facing opposition from the Gulf countries, with which relations are still quite good, immediately let it be known that it “completely rejected” the Arab position. A statement from the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry even expressed its “concern” about “wrong positions” on the subject, ignoring, says Addis Ababa, the “legitimate rights in Ethiopia” where the sources of the Nile lie.
