Speakers on Somalia’s resumption of elections next week in Mogadishu’s source

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The leaders of the federal government and the federal states are expected to meet in Mogadishu next Sunday to discuss the country’s long-standing electoral conflict.

A source close to the presidency told Axadlethat mediation from international partners has managed to persuade the parties to open the conference on March 21.

All the leaders of the federal states have already arrived in Mogadishu and have held separate meetings with foreign ambassadors based in Halane in recent days.

The forthcoming forum was organized by the partners to bring together Somali political stakeholders who have been under pressure to reach agreement on the electoral process.

Earlier, Northeastern State and Jubaland demanded that opposition candidates be included in the election negotiations, but Villa Somalia refused after the prime minister met with the opposition.

It is not known whether the summit next week will be fruitful, as the parties showed no signs of compromise to resolve the stalemate over the election.

Somalia’s international partners have called on all actors to take concrete action on the election to prevent the country from slipping into a vacuum of power and political chaos.

The outgoing President Farmajo, whose 4-year term ended last month, could not hold an inclusive, timely and peaceful election to elect a successor and a new parliament.
