Five days after his death, the Archbishop of Kampala, Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, was buried at 10 a.m. at Rubaga Cathedral in Uganda. Lwanga was found lifeless in his bed on Saturday, the day after a particularly virulent homily against the authorities. If the cause of his death is now known, it is still considered suspicious by part of the population.

According to the autopsy, Cyprian Kizito Lwanga suffered a heart attack on Saturday, April 3, caused by a blocked artery.

The day before, during Good Friday’s homily, the Archbishop of Kampala expressed his concern over the actions of the security forces and the recent disappearance of Ugandan citizens.

A position that could have been fatal for him, say internet users. Since Sunday, rumors have been circulating about the causes of his death.

A disappearance described by former presidential candidate Bobi Wine as a “black day for the Catholic Church and Uganda in general”, opposition MPs recall that two other religious leaders have disappeared for months without explanation.

In the Catholic community, Father Vincent Lubega, head of the Ugandan Martyrs’ Basilica in Kampala, praised him and described him as a defender of human rights, who loved the people and for whom spiritual health was as important as health.

President Yoweri Museveni expressed to him his “deep sorrow” at the death of the Archbishop of Kampala, a man he said “died in the faith.”

The Archbishop of Kampala was buried on Thursday morning at Rubaga Cathedral after a 10-hour mass. Its supporters will be at least 500, a limited number to respect Covid-19’s health rules.
