Following the alleged massacre, Ethiopia says it is moving fast to restore order in Tigray
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – Ethiopian authorities are keen to restore peace and stability to the Tigray region, which has now emerged, months after the assassination, which killed thousands of government critics, leading to massive international condemnation.
The Tigray crisis shocked the world after reports of mass murder, rape and torture were published, linking the Ethiopian Armed Forces. [ENDF] and the Eritrean troops to atrocities committed. The UN described the killings as “unacceptable”.
The United States has already hit a number of officials with travel sanctions over the killings when President Joe Biden called for an “immediate ceasefire”. The Eritrean troops have yet to withdraw from Tigray even after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed promised to oust them.
The Interim Administration in the Tigray Region has made extensive efforts to limit the challenges faced in the region, CEO [CEO] from Interim Administration, Dr. Abreham Belay Said.
Abreham Belay made the comments on Tuesday during his meeting with the House of Federation’s Democratic Unity, Constitutional Education, and Peace Building Affairs Standing Committee, Fana reported.
According to ENA, the discussion focused on efforts to ensure peace and stability in Tigray as well as activities to address the challenges in the region.
During the meeting, the Interim Admin CEO, Abreham Belay, said that efforts are underway to mitigate the challenges in the region. The Standing Committee, for its part, promised to provide the necessary support to the interim administrator in an attempt to solve the existing problems in the region in a sustainable way.
Discussions were also held on the conditions for budgetary adjustment to the regional state, as the current situation does not allow the region to collect its own revenues due to the existing challenges, it states. Directions have been established to rehabilitate people displaced due to safety concerns in the region.
In related news, the CEO further discussed with the management of Ethiopian Airports Enterprise ways to resume operations of Shire and Axum airports after the major maintenance. The two cities were massively affected by the war.
The progress comes even after Djibouti extradited three people believed to be the Tigray People’s Liberation Front [TPLF] fighters otherwise known as the Tigray Defense Forces [TDF]. The three will be prosecuted in Addis Ababa in the midst of an uprising by Tigray residents.
The war started in November 2020 after TPLF fighters allegedly attacked the ENDF Northern Command. Eritrean troops invaded Tigray after the TPLF fired grenades at Asmara, but their presence has shaken international partners accusing Ethiopia of impunity.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been under pressure to bring order to the country, given that he had been rewarded by the Nobel Peace Prize. Since the takeover in 2018, ethnic conflicts have escalated in Ethiopia in what analysts link to comprehensive reforms and improved democratization.
