Casualties Anticipated Following Devastating Explosion in Somalia
Explosion Shakes Mogadishu: Casualties Feared After Attack on Liido Beach
On late Friday night, chaos erupted in Somalia’s bustling capital, Mogadishu, as a devastating explosion targeted a crowded locale.
A massive blast reverberated through the city, particularly at the popular Liido beach, igniting fears of casualties. Immediately following the explosion, sounds of gunfire filled the air.
Police spokesperson Ahmed Abdi communicated with Anadolu Agency (AA), reporting that law enforcement officials and various security teams stormed to the scene, which is often bustling with tourists and locals visiting nearby hotels.
According to Abdi, the primary thoroughfare leading to the explosion site has been cordoned off, reinforcing the seriousness of the situation.
“We’re still piecing together the details behind this explosion, but initial signs point towards a suicide bombing,” Abdi stated. He continued, “At this moment, we lack clear information regarding the number of fatalities or injuries.”
Nonetheless, the unsettling sounds of the explosion and ensuing gunfire imply that there may be significant casualties, he acknowledged.
This area attracts a mix of civilians, security personnel, and entrepreneurs, making it a prime target for such attacks.
While no group has immediately taken blame for this heinous act, the terrorist organization al-Shabaab, linked to al-Qaida, has previously claimed responsibility for various incidents in this region.
