as reported from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kamanda Wa Kamanda

On Sunday, December 6, Irenge Patrick Kafarire was shot cold in the village of Mbobero. This human rights activist tried to stop Sergeant Bwira Malira from taking a mobile phone from a woman. The man in the uniform points the gun at Patrick Irenge and shoots empty. The surrounding audience panics, riots break out.

Which military personnel?

Several questions arise which particularly concern the number of soldiers in Mbobero, the units to which they belong and even their actual activities. According to sources at the site, no soldier in this concession has an official mission document. Yesterday, Friday 18 December, as well as the first day of the hearings on Wednesday, the civil party’s lawyers requested the presence at the next hearing of Joseph Kabila himself as well as of all the officers handling the documents in the Mbobero concession. The court will give its answer next Wednesday.

Questions about the procedure

In addition, Jean-Chrysostome Kijana, coordinator of the NGO, explains that the population also expresses doubts about the regularity of the procedure that enabled Joseph Kabila to acquire about 300 hectares of land in Mbobero.
