first assessment of the voting day,
In the wake of a polling day marked by disruption from armed groups inside the country, and while the count continues, there is a first mapping of the sub-prefectures where the poll took place.
as reported from Bangui, Charlotte Cosset
The Minister of Territorial Administration, Augustin Yangana Yahote, conducted the count on Monday morning, December 28: 36 sub-prefectures were able to vote normally, 6 partially and 29 sub-prefectures could not vote at all. This choice is therefore, according to him, a success in a very delicate security context.
“We could not expect a vote of 100%” of the sub-prefectures) “

Voters at localities in the northeastern part of the country were able to vote without any problems. Other regions have become more affected, such as Bouar or Bossangoa. In these cities, armed groups simply blocked the vote, in some others they destroyed election material.
Some voices are raised about what to do next in areas where voters could not go to the polls. In these cases, it is the Constitutional Court that decides. The possibility of by-elections has been mentioned by some actors, ie the vote could be reorganized in areas where it could not take place on Sunday.
The count continues
In Bangui, the capital, which brings together about 250,000 voters out of 1.8 million, the vote took place despite fears who surrounded that day. Earlier in the week, rumors had caused an uncontrolled panic movement even in the city center, giving rise to fears of this polling day, even in the capital.
Finally, the Banguissois were there and long queues arose in front of the polling stations, according to RFI reporters. Dysfunctions and logistical problems were noted, but the decision on Banguissois was there, although the participation rate is not yet known.
This Monday morning, Bangui is awaiting observer reports today, and the count continues throughout the territory, the national electoral authority assures. ANE also specifies that all results will be sent to Bangui by road whenever possible or by air. Preliminary results are expected on January 4.
