Safeguarding the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden: A Collective Duty

The Fight Against Terrorism: A Collective Journey Towards Peace

Since re-assuming my presidential duties in 2022, my unwavering commitment has been to confront the threats posed by Al-Shabaab and ISIS head-on. We are implementing a comprehensive strategy that tackles them on two critical fronts: ideology and finance. This dual approach is not just an operational necessity; it is a moral imperative.

Ideological Defense: Unmasking the Falsehoods

On the ideological front, we have gathered over 300 esteemed scholars to challenge the unfounded narratives these groups propagate. Through organized media campaigns and community awareness programs, we are working to reassure the Somali populace of Islam’s true, peaceful nature. This process of clarification is vital, especially in a world often clouded by misconceptions. Can you imagine the impact of a well-informed community standing together against extremism? By illuminating the truths of our faith, we are cultivating a society that consciously rejects all forms of radicalism.

A Financial Offensive: Cutting Off Support

On the financial front, our focused efforts to dismantle the funding channels of these terrorist organizations have shown promising outcomes. Hundreds of suspicious bank accounts have been shut down, and intricate networks that previously extorted citizens and businesses have been meticulously dismantled. These actions have not only fortified our financial security but also empowered our armed forces, enabling them to reclaim vast areas of our homeland. Even amidst severe challenges and losses, our resolve remains unyielding. Every victory we chalk up, no matter how small, adds to a mounting sense of progress. Isn’t it uplifting to witness tangible success in such dire circumstances?

A Regional Battle: Beyond Our Borders

However, our struggle against terrorism is not confined to our borders—it is a regional battle for peace and stability. Terrorism, after all, spares no one and knows no boundaries. Recognizing this, we understand that dismantling these networks in Somalia is the first step in a larger fight. How can we allow terrorists to gain a foothold that could ultimately threaten our neighbors and, indeed, the world?

The Stakes: Strategic Importance of the Region

The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden are pivotal to global security and the economy. Here, various terrorist factions operate, notably Al-Qaeda, Al-Shabaab, ISIS, and the Houthis. Despite their apparent differences, these groups cooperate silently, their objectives dangerously aligned against regional states, including Somalia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This dangerous alliance represents an evolving threat that we must confront. How do we ensure that our response is swift and effective?

United Against Terrorism: A Strong Coalition

From the beginning, we have stood shoulder to shoulder with our allies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, joining a coalition specifically formed to combat Houthi terrorism that has imperiled both the Kingdom and Yemen. Recently, our intelligence services have identified concerning communications between the Houthis and both ISIS and Al-Shabaab. These connections reveal a worrying trend; they are exchanging weapons and tactical expertise, presenting a new level of threat that we can no longer overlook. For example, we have successfully intercepted shipments of explosives and drones destined for Somalia, and apprehended those involved in arms trafficking. Isn’t it sobering to think that these threats come from networks operating in our backyard?

On the Ground: Battling Fearlessly

On the battlefield, we are engaged in fierce operations on two significant fronts. In the Cal Miskaad Mountains and the Golis mountain range, adjacent to the Gulf of Aden, our forces continue to achieve victory after victory. Yet, to prevent this region from becoming a sanctuary for terrorism, we need the support of our regional partners. This is not just Somalia’s fight; it is ours collectively.

The second front centers around the Shebelle River, where our soldiers, backed by the African Union Mission to Somalia, have fought valiantly to ensure that the terrorist group Al-Shabaab does not seize control of our coastline along the Indian Ocean. As they aim for these vital maritime routes, we must not underestimate the significance of our collaborative efforts.

A Shared Responsibility: Collective Security

Controlling these vital maritime waters in the Gulf of Aden and along the Indian Ocean is not merely an operational goal. It is crucial for the security and economic future of all nations bordering these waters. The fate of our collective security hangs in the balance; rooting out these terrorist groups is imperative to prevent the fires of extremism from spreading.

Yes, the path we tread is riddled with challenges, and we have paid a heavy price, but we believe the destination is worth every sacrifice. With steadfast determination and the grace of God, we will continue our journey towards a safe, new Somalia—one that stands as a beacon of regional and international peace.

Integration for Future Peace

We realize that peace and security in Somalia cannot be achieved in isolation from regional stability. Thus, as we persistently combat these threats, we extend our hand to partners and allies in the region and beyond. The collective security of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden is a shared responsibility that demands collaboration and integration among all countries involved. Together, we can circumvent the impending threats to our peace.
