After Exploring 89 Nations, I’ve Found a Hidden European Treasure That Surpasses Paris and London.

I've visited 89 countries and hundreds of cities. My favorite place is an underrated European gem that outshines Paris and London.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Throughout my travels, I’ve had the unique privilege of visiting 89 countries and calling various cities home. It might sound clichéd, but it is true: I have yet to encounter a country I didn’t enjoy. However, some places resonate with me more deeply; perhaps you’ve experienced the same wonder while exploring the globe, wondering what makes a place truly special? What if it isn’t just the sightseeing, but the stories we weave as we connect with each destination?

Take, for instance, my journey to some of the planet’s hidden gems, like the picturesque islands of the Maldives, which boast breathtaking beaches and luxurious overwater bungalows. Then there are smaller yet remarkable nations like Vatican City, which encapsulates history and faith, and dynamic landscapes like those found in South Africa, where world-renowned vineyards flourish alongside stunning wildlife reserves.

Of course, I’ve also roamed through those celebrated European cities—Paris, where every corner seems steeped in romance, and London, a vibrant mosaic of cultures I was fortunate enough to call home for a time. While I adore both cities, if I had to narrow it down to a top five, they would undeniably secure a spot. But if I could choose just one place to settle into for the long haul, it would be Salzburg, Austria—without a doubt.

Why Salzburg Captivates Me

Salzburg occupies a special place in my heart. Nestled at the foothills of the majestic Alps, it offers an intimacy that larger cities often lack. Here, the steady stream of tourists pales in comparison to the bustling streets of London or Paris, allowing for a more genuine immersion into the rich tapestry of local culture. What is it about a smaller city that can make one feel more at home? Perhaps it’s the feeling of belonging as you stroll through its lovely streets.

The natural beauty surrounding Salzburg is simply breathtaking. With its lush greenery, sparkling lakes, and winding rivers, the city is a feast for the eyes. Winters do bring a chill, reminiscent of upstate New York. However, the overall climate tends to be rather pleasant—ideal conditions that make exploring all the more enjoyable. Can you recall a moment when the landscape took your breath away? It’s moments like these that forge lasting memories.

Salzburg is steeped in rich history, from its illustrious museums to its ornate Gothic and Baroque architecture. It proudly claims the title of birthplace of the great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Walking the same streets where he once roamed invokes a sense of connection to the past. Furthermore, if you happen to be a fan of cinema, you’ll appreciate the fact that parts of “The Sound of Music” were filmed right here. Who could forget Maria and the children singing “Do-Re-Mi” in the stunning Mirabell Gardens?

Salzburg: A Place for Everyone

What I find particularly refreshing about Salzburg is its accessibility. While it maintains a charm often reserved for lesser-known destinations, it doesn’t come with astronomical prices. Most accommodations fall within a reasonable range of $100 to $400 per night. This affordability significantly enhances its appeal to various travelers. Isn’t it rewarding to find a gem that allows for immersive experiences without breaking the bank?

Salzburg is also an exceptional hub for skiing enthusiasts. Although you won’t find ski slopes directly in the city, a short jaunt into the surrounding mountains opens a world of winter sports opportunities. For a younger crowd seeking nightlife, the city doesn’t disappoint either. Dynamic clubs and excellent restaurants abound, ensuring that even though Salzburg is not a sprawling metropolis, it offers a vibrant cultural scene.

The Heartwarming Welcome of Locals

One compelling aspect of Salzburg is its multicultural environment. Many locals converse in English, German, and occasionally French, enhancing the travel experience. It’s a wonderful setting to gain authentic insights into European culture in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. How often do you find places that afford you the opportunity to connect deeply with locals and perhaps make friends for life?

If I were to draw comparisons, I might liken Salzburg to the enchanting cities of Prague or Edinburgh. However, neither of those can rival the sheer natural beauty presented by Salzburg’s mountains and rivers—a backdrop that can only be described as magical.

What stands out most, though, is the genuine warmth of the locals. They embrace visitors with open arms, transforming strangers into friends over shared drinks and laughter. I vividly remember my first visit to Salzburg. I met a couple from Florida, who welcomed me into their lives with astonishing generosity. They showed me the hidden gems of their community, introduced me to local delicacies, and even invited me on a boat ride. Isn’t it incredible how a simple act of kindness can turn a fleeting encounter into lifelong memories? My connection to this city led me to return four times, each visit filled with positive interactions and experiences.

Through every trip, I’ve found warmth and kindness in abundance. Conversations often lead to deeper discussions about life, where we come from, and what draws us to Salzburg. This sense of belonging is a feeling that resonates within me deeply, marking Salzburg as a destination I will always cherish.

In the end, the beauty of travel isn’t solely in the places we visit but in the stories we collect along the way. Salzburg remains a testament to that notion, with every visit adding another chapter to my unfolding adventure.
