Arrest and alleged confession

Police in Puntland State took Hodan Mahmoud Dirie into custody shortly after the body of Saabirin Saylan Abdulle was found, officials said. Dirie will be formally presented in court as investigators continue their inquiries.

Evidence found during investigation

Investigators examining the suspect’s mobile phone reported finding material they said indicated the victim had been subjected to repeated abuse and forced labour while living and working in Dirie’s household. A postmortem examination found multiple injuries on the girl’s body, including signs consistent with strangulation and severe beating on several parts of her body.

The killing has inflamed public sentiment in the area, with residents staging demonstrations demanding justice for the girl. Puntland State police urged residents to remain calm and said the suspect will face legal proceedings under the law.

Ongoing process

Authorities have not released further details on the expected charges or timetable for court appearance beyond saying the suspect will be presented to the judiciary. Police and forensic teams continue their work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death.
