Ethiopian Hijab Prohibition Forces 159 Muslim Girls to Leave School

Mogadishu (AX) — A recent decision by school authorities in Axum, Ethiopia, has sparked significant controversy by prohibiting Muslim girls from donning hijabs while at school, driving over 159 students away from their education. This directive has ignited a firestorm within Ethiopia’s Muslim community, who have condemned the move as a blatant breach of religious liberty.

The Supreme Islamic Council of Tigray emphatically criticized the decision, branding it both discriminatory and unconstitutional.

“This ruling dramatically conflicts with Ethiopia’s deep roots of religious tolerance,” the council declared in a statement, further noting that Muslim students have endured harassment and detention simply for practicing their faith.

A senior student at Axum High School, speaking anonymously, voiced her turmoil.

“While my classmates continue their studies, I’m left behind at home. This ban has crushed my hopes,” she expressed, urging the government to retract the directive.

Ethiopia’s education system is already faltering under severe pressure, with around 9 million children missing education due to ongoing conflicts and environmental calamities. The hijab prohibition compounds this crisis, placing additional barriers before Muslim girls and thereby accentuating educational disparities.

Spiritual leaders and champions of human rights are pressing the Ethiopian government to step in.

“Aimed policies at certain groups endanger national unity and trample on essential rights,” stated a human rights advocate, demanding brisk action to ensure all students can access education.

The ban is viewed as a seed of discord, planting division where there should be harmony, and breaking down bridges that unite communities through education and mutual respect. It serves as a poignant reminder of the need for policies that embrace inclusion and respect the rich tapestry of cultures and beliefs that shape Ethiopia.

As the nation wades through its challenges, the imperative to nurture a holistic educational atmosphere that cherishes diversity rather than penalizes it grows more pronounced.
