UAE Provides 700 Tons of Food Assistance to Somalia Amid Severe Drought

Mogadishu (AX) — In a generous act of solidarity, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has come to the aid of Somalia by delivering a staggering 700 tons of food supplies. This generous donation aims to help communities severely impacted by the ongoing drought in the region.

The handover ceremony took place in Mogadishu, where UAE Ambassador to Somalia Ahmed Juma Al-Rumaithi formally transferred the lifesaving supplies to Somali Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) Commissioner Mohamud Moallin Abdulle. This gesture is a testament to the UAE’s commitment to supporting Somalia during these challenging times.

Speaking about the distribution, Commissioner Abdulle detailed the allocation of the food supplies, revealing that 300 tons are earmarked for Kismayo, a city in dire need, while an additional 200 tons will make their way to Bosaso. These areas are home to residents grappling with the harsh effects of the drought. The remaining 200 tons are reserved for regions where conditions are exceptionally severe, yet details of these specific locations have not been disclosed.

The precarious situation in Somalia is further aggravated by the failure of the Deyr rainy season, which generally occurs between September and November. This climatic anomaly has left the nation struggling to cope with dwindling water sources and failing crops.

Reacting to the escalating crisis, Somalia’s federal government officially announced a drought phase in late 2024. This declaration was an urgent plea for international aid, aiming to rally support and resources to counteract the life-threatening impact of this environmental catastrophe.

This crucial aid from the UAE underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing humanitarian emergencies. It reflects a shared understanding among nations that in battling nature’s wrath, unity and support transcend borders.

The UAE’s assistance provides hope and relief to many who are battling both climate adversities and food insecurity. As this situation unfolds, it is a poignant reminder of our interconnectedness and the necessity of compassion and generosity in times of need.
