Ethiopian Embassy in Somalia Set to Move from Presidential Palace Location
Ethiopian Embassy Shift from Presidential Palace in Somalia
MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Ethiopian embassy in Somalia is gearing up for a shift from the highly guarded confines of the presidential abode. This decision, according to Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, the Foreign Affairs minister, comes at a time when the ties between these neighboring nations hit a rough patch, following a contentious agreement between Addis Ababa and North Western State of Somalia.
Presently, the embassy snugly sits within Mogadishu’s presidential premises. However, Fiqi mentioned that it’s on the move back to its original locale far from the palace’s shadow.
Fiqi explained that this change is a reaction to a significant clamor from the public. Many citizens of Somalia see the embassy’s location as a whisper of Ethiopia’s ambitions to gobble up Somali lands.
In a conversation with state television, Foreign Minister Fiqi remarked, “The Ethiopian embassy’s nest within our presidential palace is simply not tenable. We are on track to ensure it makes the jump back to its rightful plot of dirt, which, as of now, stands empty.”
He further commented, “The Somali folks’ beef with the embassy’s abode is legit. We’re hustling to relocate it out from under the presidential roof post-haste.”
Fiqi’s words echo his earlier statements pointing out that Ethiopia erected the embassy after the 2006 ‘incursion’ into Somalia. This move was supposedly to clear out al-Shabaab forces. Historically, Ethiopia led the charge into Somalia when al-Shabaab took root.
There’s some serious friction between Ethiopia and Somalia over a contentious MoU. While Mogadishu demands its axing, Ethiopia sticks firm to its ambition of securing sea access via North Western State of Somalia, claiming it’s all aboveboard and legit according to international norms.
The particulars of this pact are shrouded in secrecy. However, if it comes to fruition, Ethiopia might officially give North Western State of Somalia the nod as an independent state, skirting around established global protocols. For over thirty years, North Western State of Somalia has been shouting for acknowledgment after splitting from Somalia.
