Ruben Dias in talks about a new contract

Manchester City have begun talks with Ruben Dias about a new long-term contract, just a year after the Portuguese midfielder joined the Premier League champions.

The 24-year-old was crucial to the citizens’ title fee last season, which revolutionized a backline that ended the campaign with only 32 goals conceded in 38 matches.

Dia’s contribution was recognized in the form of the season’s award for the 2020/21 campaign, but Man City want to reward him further by tying him to a new contract, according to The Sun.

This comes just one year after the club originally signed the defender, who put the pen to an incredible six-year deal that runs until the summer of 2026. However, they are moving fast to offer him more lucrative terms.

The Portuguese national team player earns around 90,000 pounds a week at the Etihad Stadium, which was more than twice as much as his salary at the former club Benfica. However, the £ 61m signing is still one of the lower incomes in Manchester, and the citizens will offer him a deal that reflects his value to the team.

Midfielder John Stones recently signed a new long-term contract at the club, worth around £ 250,000 a week, and Man City will offer Dias a deal similar to England’s international in an attempt to secure and reward his talisman.

The midfielder transformed Pep Guardiola’s side last season and arrived at the end of September, after the citizens suffered a shocking 5-2 defeat against Leicester City. He immediately improved his defense, set a good example and conceded just 26 more goals throughout the campaign.

His commanding performances led Man City to their first ever Champions League final, although they could not cross the line against Chelsea. Dias also presented strongly for Portugal at Euro 2020, where Selecao failed to defend its crown.

Dias strives to help Man City finish the chase for the Champions League trophy this season, as well as retain the Premier League title amid fierce competition from Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool, among others.
