Southampton are increasingly convinced to sign Brandon Williams on a season-long loan from Manchester United.
The defender is a long-term goal for the Saints with the club trying to get him in under each of the last two transfer windows. On both occasions, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer failed to give the green light when he wanted Williams to join the squad.
Although United competed on several fronts last season, Williams made only 14 appearances in all competitions and contributed with a lone assist.
According to The Athletic, Southampton are finally looking to secure the 20-year-old’s services this summer. Williams is keen on first team football and has a much better chance of receiving it on the south coast than at Old Trafford.
Although not all the details of the transfer have been agreed, a move looks increasingly likely. One thing that needs to be confirmed is payroll taxes. United expect all of Williams’ salary to be covered by Southampton and also want a loan fee.

The Red Devils demanded £ 1.5 million from West Ham as part of Jesse Lingard’s half-season loan in January. It is not yet clear how much Ed Woodward values Williams, but with Southampton’s strong admirers of the player, it is unlikely to cause any problems. However, it is believed that a purchase clause will not be included in the agreement.
Williams has little chance of expelling Luke Shaw from United, who starts XI at any time, but with Alex Telles not yet asserting himself in Manchester, he could possibly be Shaw’s long-term successor.
If he joins Southampton, he will be the second hill Ralph Hasenhuttl has signed this window, along with Romain Perraud who has arrived from Stade Brest. The couple will fill the void left by Ryan Bertrand, who resigned after the end of his contract.
