Can only make a big signing

The returning Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has been informed that the club can only make a big name signing this summer.

Real’s economy has been hit by the coronavirus pandemic, and club president Florentino Perez has milked this excuse to a large extent when it justifies plans to break out and form the generally unpopular European Super League.

The club is also carrying out extensive renovations at the Santiago Bernabeu, and Marca reports that there is little money to spend in the transfer window.

Real have been linked with Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe and Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland, but Los Blancos will likely only sign at most one of those goals in the coming months.

While Real have lost their way at the upper end of the pitch and their quest for Mbappe and Haaland is justified, they are also in desperate need of defensive reinforcements.

Club legend Sergio Ramos has already announced that he will leave the club on a free transfer, while France center-back Raphael Varane continues to be strongly linked with a move away, with a move to Manchester United looking like a real possibility.

Bayern Munich defender David Alaba has already signed a free contract and will join his new team-mates in Madrid later this summer, and Real are one of a number of clubs lined up to sign Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.

But it seems that all hopes of a complete rebuilding of the squad this summer have disappeared, and Ancelotti is preparing to settle for what he already has at his disposal in Madrid.

Striped players like Mariano, Luka Jovic, Dani Ceballos and Brahim Diaz are expected to move on to raise money and the future of Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale is still uncertain.
