In Senegal promoged in response to the colossal

The project to promote integrated management and the economy for solid waste (Promoged) was officially launched on Thursday 24 June in Mbeubeuss, a giant landfill in the city of Malika, on the outskirts of Dakar.

as reported from Dakar,Charlotte idrac

It is an open dump at the gate to Dakar: the Mbeubeuss website, which opened in 1968, has become an ecological and sanitary hell. With Promoged, it will be disinfected and gradually rehabilitated thanks to the installation of a waste sorting and composting unit. This is the first step in a comprehensive state-funded program to improve public sanitation. Ultimately, the project aims to create 150 waste management infrastructures in 138 municipalities and will generate 3,000 jobs.

“The landfill will cease to be a source of threat to become a niche of opportunities,” said Malika Mayor Talla Gadiaga.

Mbeubeuss, eventually the regions of Thiès, Saint Louis, Matam, Ziguinchor, Sédhiou and Kolda will have to be covered by Promoged Total cost of the project: 314 million euros, or 206 billion FCFA, of which 163 billion is financed by donors, the World Bank, Spanish cooperation, the European Investment Bank and the French Development Agency. Goals declared by President Macky Sall: a “zero waste Senegal”.

“Promoged should therefore contribute to eradicating illegal dumping, harmful to the environment, public health, economic activities and the attractiveness of our cities.”

An ambitious project, which also raises concerns: in a forum, the National Confederation of Workers of Senegal and NGO Wiego are calling for a more “inclusive and transparent” process to protect the approximately 2,000 “waste pickers” working at the Mbeubeuss landfill. .
