state of emergency declared in West Darfur

The latest violence between rival tribes in this troubled region of Sudan has left at least 50 dead and more than 120 injured since Saturday, according to the Sudanese Medical Association.

These clashes began on Saturday in El-Geneina, the capital of this state. They would have started, according to the UN, when a man shot at members of a tribe who were towing their vehicle to the capital. As always, violence degenerated rapidly, causing dozens of victims in three days. This prompted the authorities to issue a state of emergency. This Tuesday, shots were still heard in several neighborhoods in El-Geneina. What drives some residents to flee their homes.

This increased tension comes when the authorities have to deal with a larger arms circulation in the country. Especially in Darfur where tribal conflicts are frequent. In January last year, they killed more than 200 people, especially in the capital.

The events of the last few days threaten to exacerbate an already uncertain situation. The UN announces that humanitarian flights have been suspended for the time being to El-Geneina, considered a relief center in the region. This measure can affect more than 700,000 people.
