Player ratings as Willock strikes see Spurs slip up in the top four hunt

Tottenham conceded a late equalizer to drop to 2-2 with Newcastle on Sunday afternoon, and missed the chance to skip Chelsea and climb into the Champions League qualifiers.

Magpies started the game brightly and Dwight Gayle should have put the hosts ahead but his double effort was fantastically saved by Hugo Lloris. However, the Frenchman could not deny Joelinton up close, as Newcastle capitalized on some terrible defense to take a shock lead.

That advantage lasted only a minute when Harry Kane took advantage of some equally slack defenses to hit home an equalizer. The England captain finished the turn four minutes later and hammered into the far corner from right into the box.

Spurs killed to kill the game in the second half and Miguel Almiron had to be vigilant against Japhet Tanganga’s effort off the line. Newcastle created several clear chances, but Joelinton could only poke wide from inside the six-yard box.

Kane had a chance to level the score at 85 minutes but he hit the post, and the Magpies punished the visitors, with substitutes and loaned out Gunner Joe Willock who hit home from close range to equalize.

Okay, let’s go ahead with the players’ ratings.

Martin Dubravka (GK) – 6/10 – Sewn from his defense of Kane’s first strike. Beat by the pace and accuracy of the other.

Emil Krafth (CB) – 5/10 – Made it difficult when I read Lo Celso’s passport, but missed his interception and allowed Kane to push home. Shocking little game.

Jamaal Lascelles (CB) – 6/10 – Played behind three with two backs and it turned out. The organization was everywhere in the store, and his teammates crumbled around him.

Paul Dummett (CB) – 5/10 – Kane lost completely for the second goal, so he could pull off and hit the far corner. Booked for unnecessary foul on touchline.

Jacob Murphy (RWB) – 7/10 – Whipped a delicious cross on Gayle’s head during the first half, but the striker could not get his effort on goal. Sin. Could not get over fast enough to stop Kane on the line.

Jonjo Shelvey (CM) – 6/10 – Nice little cut dink into the box to find Gayle, but he wasted both chances. Sprayed some nice passes around the pitch. Took a yellow for a foul from behind.

Sean Longstaff (CM) – 5/10 – Had a great chance to level at the end of the first half, but did not want to use his left foot. Probably should have risked it.

Matt Ritchie (LWB) – 7/10 – Pinged some excellent balls along the left flank for Joelinton and Gayle to chase into the channels. Fast enough. Curled in a fantastic post for the equalizer.

Miguel Almiron (AM) – 7/10 – Pulled some free kicks to buy Newcastle some precious recovery time. Linked nicely to Gayle, but could not get into points positions. Fantastic nod off the line to save his side.

Joelinton (ST) – 7/10 – Made good for an early miss with a calm finish to take the lead. Missed a sitter to equalize late though. Redeemed himself again by keeping the leveling motion alive with a clever nod at the far post.

Dwight Gayle (ST) – 6/10 – How did he not score ?! Forced a brilliant initial save from Lloris, but should not have given the Frenchman a prayer with the second effort. You can not miss them in a relegation battle.

Allan Saint-Maximin (LW) – 8/10

Joe Willock (CM) – 8/10

Javier Manquillo (RWB) – 6/10

Hugo Lloris (GK) – 7/10 – Pulled out a crazy double save to deny Gayle, first reached out to clear a head and then made himself big to suffocate at the nearest post. Crucial. No chance to stop Joelinton’s opener or the late equalizer.

Japhet Tanganga (RB) – 6/10 – Played Sanchez in trouble for Newcastle opener with a badly tried cut ball. Got a yellow card for a nasty challenge halfway. Let the late cross fly in and wreak havoc.Davinson Sanchez (CB) – 5/10 – Ugly try with the head early and gave the ball back to Newcastle. Repeated the performance later in the first half and did not get away with it. Terrible passing ability – really, really bad. A bull in a china shop trying to stop Willock from leveling.

Joe Rodon (CB) – 8/10 – Produced some nice listening and read Joelinton’s movement extremely competently. Led the back line and showed experience beyond his years when Newcastle tried to find parity.

Sergio Reguilon (LB) – 7/10 – A threat to the overlap on the left flank and did not meet too many defensive fights from Murphy. Put in a bad cross in the second half, when he could have killed the game with the right ball.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (DM) – 7/10 – Lost control of the game during the initial half hour, but regained control when Spurs shook the lead. Had excellent to stop Saint-Maximin at full speed during the second half.

Giovani Lo Celso (CM) – 6/10 – Played the ball that somehow found its way to Kane for its first. Help with a little fortune. Picked up a yellow for a deliberate block on Almiron. Occupied.

Tanguy Ndombele (CM) – 8/10 – Brought a lot of calm and class to the midfield when Spurs needed it most, released deep to gather possession and bring others into play. Drove the Spurs forward for the equalizer. Beautifully weighted pass to deliver Kane for his second strike. Ooze’s quality.Lucas Moura (AM) – 6/10 – Curled a swinging free kick into the box that missed everyone – including the long post. Had little impact during the second half and slowed down after an hour.

Harry Kane (ST) – 8/10 – Stung Dubravka’s palms with a decent effort on his weaker foot. Had the simple task of knocking home from a Newcastle bull. Clinical finish for others. Once again the difference creator.Carlos Vinicius (ST) – 6/10 – Tucked away nicely after 24 minutes, but even he knew he had deviated offside in the build-up. Did not offer anything else during the first period and was connected at half time. A hard lesson.

46 – Welcome back, #Sonny!
