In Senegal, President Macky Sall is preparing a new “economic tour” in the north of the country this weekend, especially in the Saint-Louis and Matam regions. These marathon trips within the country allow, according to the head of state, “to see the state of implementation of the various projects”.

One of the government’s major programs is access to electricity for all, planned for 2025. Today, 58% of the population living in rural areas do not have access to this energy. Meanwhile, some have found a convenient alternative for charging mobile phones or computers. Report from our correspondent in Senegal, Charlotte idrac, in the village of Al Ngourane, 35 km north of Saint Louis, near the border with Mauritania.

Welcome to the “shop” of Al Ngourane, a local with almost 400 inhabitants. A metal kiosk, six solar panels on the roof. Inside: about 25 stores and as many mobile phones in charge. Charging a phone costs 50 FCFA, less than 10 euros. The idea was launched a few months ago by Babacar Fall, from Al Ngourane. The project, supported by German cooperation, cost a total of approximately 3.5 million CFA francs, or approximately 5,300 euros. And it changed the lives of the inhabitants!
