A Turkish ship jam-packed with necessities docked in Mogadishu on a balmy Saturday, delivering life-saving relief to Somalia.

Dubbed “The Vessel of Kindness,” it set sail from Mersin, Türkiye, on a cool morning of Sept. 29, finally tying up at Mogadishu’s port where a formal reception awaited.

High-level Somali officials, like Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama and Disaster Commissioner Mahamuud Moallim, were present with Turkish Ambassador to Somalia, Alper Aktas, during the hullabaloo.

Amidst a relentless crisis, Somalia welcomes essential aid

The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) affirmed that the cargo included sustenance, shelters, and critical life essentials to uplift vulnerable communities.

This consignment reinforces Türkiye’s enduring alliance with Somalia, amassing over 60,000 tons of relief sent to the East African territory since 2016. Often battered by calamities—drought and deluge—Somalia clings to global aid for its survival.

Türkiye staunchly backs Somalia’s journey to recovery

Türkiye’s significant contributions extend beyond mere relief to strategic investments in educating minds, bolstering infrastructure, and advancing health initiatives.

The Turkish government reiterated their solidarity, assuring, “Türkiye won’t halt the provision of aid to our sister nation, Somalia.”

Additionally, Türkiye operates its prime overseas military training grounds in Mogadishu, where it bolsters the Somali National Army, fortifying regional security.
