MOGADISHU, Somalia – One of Somalia’s leading candidates, Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, has accused the outgoing government of creating enmity and mistrust in the country in the midst of elections.

“The extroverted regime, however, created conditions for hostility and suspicion, which in turn has deepened distrust and risked the entire state and peacebuilding project,” Warsame said in a Twitter post Sunday.

The former Minister of Planning stressed the importance of holding peaceful and inclusive elections in the country in accordance with the Interim Constitution and the agreement of 17 September.

Somalia had a political culture of holding elections every four years at the end of its parliamentary and presidential term, which Warsame believes is important for the country’s political reconciliation.

His remarks came before the presidents of Northeastern State and Jubaland Said Abdullahi Deni and Ahmed Madobe met with opposition presidential candidates in Mogadishu’s Halane compound.

According to Warsame, the Sunday meeting hosted by Deni focused on how inclusive and peaceful elections could be held in Somalia and end the long-standing lattice lock between stakeholders.

The leaders of the federal government and the federal states are holding a conference in Mogadishu this week to find a solution to the ongoing crisis before the election.

The current stalemate is centered on the formation of the Electoral Commission, the appointment of a voting team for northern parliamentarians and the transfer of the Garbaharey election to Jubaland, as provided for in the September 17 agreement.
