UNMISS Calls for Adherence to Peace Accord Amid Rising Tensions in Upper Nile and Western Equatoria

UNMISS Calls for Calm Amidst Escalating Violence in South Sudan

The delicate situation in South Sudan calls for immediate attention as the U.N. Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) voices grave concerns over recent hostilities. Tensions are running high in Nassir, Upper Nile, and Western Equatoria, manifesting ominously through fatalities, property damage, and the upheaval of civilians—a manifestation of deeply rooted discord.

The dates etched into memory remain the 14th and 15th of February. A bloody exchange erupted between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and armed local youth in Nassir. Heavy weaponry was wielded with abandon, leading to an inevitable toll on both soldiers and civilians. One can’t help but wonder, what drives individuals to such acts of violence? Sadly, caught amidst this chaos was an ordinary day for a UNMISS patrol, their resolve tested as mortar shells rained from above, wounding a peacekeeper in the line of duty.

In a statement underscoring the criticality of the situation, Nicolas Haysom, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, expressed, “I urge all involved to demonstrate restraint and immediately restore calm. I also strongly condemn any violence against our peacekeepers and reiterate that such actions constitute a violation of international law.” The sentiment resonated with urgency, seeking empathy and immediate action.

But how do we arrive at a resolution? Haysom astutely highlighted that the recurring conflicts are an emphatic reminder of the urgent need for full deployment of the Necessary Unified Forces. This step, he noted, is pivotal under the Revitalized Peace Agreement. As South Sudan embarks upon yet another extension of its transitional period starting February 22, it becomes abundantly clear that adherence to this agreement is not optional—it is a lifeline to enduring peace. “The situation underscores the critical importance of full and rapid deployment of the Necessary Unified Forces…” Haysom emphasized.

Though the shadows of discord loom large over South Sudan, UNMISS remains steadfast in its commitment. The mission has intensified its engagement with local communities and authorities, working tirelessly to defuse tensions. What stories might emerge from these efforts? Residents and leaders alike now find themselves part of a narrative unfolding in real-time, one where collaboration could very well chart a course towards stability. The path may be fraught with challenges, but what else could one expect when the stakes are so high?

The questions remain pertinent—how does a nation heal from perpetual conflict? Is dialogue enough? The reflex to retaliate must be quelled by dialogue, negotiation, and goodwill. Perhaps the wisdom of ages best encapsulated by the axiom, “an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind,” could steer minds toward harmonious coexistence.

While immediate solutions are pursued, UNMISS encourages all parties to act with a sense of humanity over hostility. Transforming discourse into peace can sometimes seem as formidable as the cogs of bureaucratic machinery. However, history often shows us that with perseverance and a shared vision, indelible positive change can arise even from the ashes of adversity.
