Somalia Unveils Groundbreaking Nationwide Instant Payment System with BPC

Somalia’s New Digital Payment Era: Transforming Financial Access and Inclusion

March 24, 2025 – Mogadishu: The dawn of a new financial era has arrived in Somalia with the launch of the country’s first-ever Instant Payment System, spearheaded by the Somalia Payment Switch (SPS). This groundbreaking system, bolstered by BPC’s cutting-edge SmartVista platform, marks a pivotal step in the modernization of Somalia’s financial landscape. The Central Bank of Somalia (CBS) stands at the helm of this ambitious project, aiming not merely to streamline the payment infrastructure, but to drive economic stability and promote financial access for all.

It’s hard not to feel a sense of optimism when we see such strides being made in a country long characterized by financial challenges. Somalia, a land of resilient people yet underserved by modern banking, now steps into a new chapter. Despite notable growth in its financial sector, a significant portion of the population remained outside the banking sphere—until now.

Enter the SOMQR standard and the Somalia Payment Switch. These initiatives foster a diminished reliance on cash while promoting interoperability to extend financial services across the nation. As we ask ourselves how best to spark financial inclusion, Somalia’s answer comes by way of technology and innovation.

Choosing BPC’s SmartVista platform was a decision made with the future in mind. Why settle for less when one can integrate a system that meets both local needs and international standards? Embedded within this robust platform are crucial components: an Integration Platform ensuring seamless connectivity, a Participant Portal for real-time transaction insights, and a Dispute Portal simplifying resolutions. Moreover, BPC’s Fraud Management Solution introduces a fortified layer of security, shielding transactions from potential harm.

Initially hosted in the cloud, this transformative system will soon settle on local grounds, moving to a native data center to bolster resilience and performance. Now, with real-time processing (around the clock, all year), what used to take ages is now instantaneous. Thanks to advanced security mechanisms like Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), the realm of possibility widens even further, combining swift transfers with ironclad security.

Imagine walking into a Somali market. Instead of fumbling for cash, you simply use your smartphone or banking app. Enter a recipient’s information, verify the transaction with a pin or a One-Time Password (OTP), and enjoy the transaction’s near-magical immediacy. For merchants, inviting digital payments involves just displaying a QR code. By scanning it, consumers engage the SmartVista Instant Payment System—a display of digital elegance and efficiency.

Since its launch, no fewer than seven banks have connected to the Somalia Instant Payment System (SIPS), with anticipation of further connectivity as six additional banks and major mobile money operators are set to join. How, one might wonder, does this expansion affect the average Somali? Simply put, it weaves a tighter, more interconnected financial web, expanding access and enhancing the efficiency of everyday transactions.

Looking into the horizon, CBS and SPS envision a robust National Payment Infrastructure—one aligned with Somalia’s burgeoning economic goals and aspirations for global financial integration. “The introduction of SIPS in January 2025 sets a precedent for transformation,” declares Mr. Abdirahman M. Abdullahi, CBS Governor and SPS Chairperson. “This system is a cornerstone for developing modern, speed-driven transactions that lift Somalia’s economy into a promising, cashless future.”

“We are honored to support Somalia’s transition toward a fully digital, inclusive financial ecosystem,” echoed Angelo Bertini, Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at BPC. “Collaborating closely with SPS throughout this journey, we offer next-generation technology pivotal in facilitating safe and efficient payment transactions. Our SmartVista platform is not just a tool—it’s a promise for continuous advancement, ensuring financial inclusion reaches more communities, far and wide.”

With each new advance, one must ponder—what does the future hold for Somalia’s evolving financial narrative? The seeds planted by SIPS today may just be the roots of a thriving economic tree tomorrow.
