Kenya’s Displaced Deputy Accuses NIS of Plotting His Demise
NAIROBI, Kenya – Ousted Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua asserts there were schemes to eliminate him even before the parliament sparked off his impeachment process, potentially steering Kenya towards a constitutional rift.
Gachagua, appearing notably weary post-discharge from Karen Hospital where he was admitted last Thursday, recalled two unsettling episodes with alleged attempts on his life orchestrated by National Intelligence Service (NIS) personnel during his official engagements.
“In Kisumu, on August 30th, covert officers infiltrated my lodging, intending to taint my meal. Thanks to quick detection, I slipped out unscathed,” he recalled with concern.
“Then on September 3rd, in Nyeri, NIS agents again staged a poisoning attempt targeting not just me, but also the Kikuyu elders. A report went out to NIS; I told my attached officers to step down. After failing in their assassination attempts, an impeachment plot was concocted,” he lamented.
Though these claims remain uncorroborated by Axadle, whispers have surfaced about Gachagua shunning meals at public engagements. He leveled these allegations on his release from the medical facility.
In a verbal onslaught at President William Ruto, Gachagua accused him of disliking inconvenient truths. He lambasted the decisions to strip him of his security post-senate’s impeachment backing, insisting, “I wasn’t granted a fair hearing; waiting for my recovery wasn’t much to ask.”
“While hospitalized, my brother and companion, President Ruto, stripped my Keren estate and Nyeri home of security. My close officers were relieved and cautioned against approaching me.”
The beleaguered deputy lamented disloyalty, alleging persecution for his candidness—especially against forced evictions, severe tax laws, and shadowy financial dealings.
“I’m astounded by the harshness of someone I championed to presidency—someone I faced trial supporting. It’s unfathomable, his cruelty, while I’m tethered to a hospital bed.”
Ruto reportedly forced Gachagua’s staff into leave, immobilizing the Deputy President’s office at a vulnerable time. “How cruel must one be?”
The President’s proposal of Kithure Kindiki as Interior Cabinet Secretary faces legal suspension following conservative court orders. Gachagua remains optimistic about justice being realized as hearings commence on Tuesday, October 22nd.
With regret, he noted that his ailing health barred him from attending Senate interrogations. Adding to his woes, he claimed state operatives hindered aircraft from flying him to the Mashujaa Day event in Kwale, sidelining him further.
