In a landmark event, the South West State of Somalia (SWS) Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Internal Security proudly accepted the keys to their newly constructed ministerial buildings in Baidoa. This significant achievement, made possible by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) with the generous backing of the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), symbolizes a new dawn of governmental capabilities and public service.
“Security and justice are the bedrock of peace and stability,” remarked SWS President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen. His words reflect the shared vision that these facilities will serve as a catalyst for progress in this fragile region.
The anticipation was palpable during the handover ceremony held on July 22nd. As President Laftagareen addressed the attendees, he expressed heartfelt appreciation for the UK’s financial support and IOM’s steadfast partnership. It’s a moment that transcends mere construction, as it represents the commitment to nurturing institutional strength and restoring public trust.
Charles King, the British Ambassador to Somalia, mirrored this sentiment when he stated, “I’m delighted to see the successful handover of buildings for the South West State Ministries of Justice and Internal Security, funded by the UK government.” His enthusiasm was contagious, as he emphasized the buildings’ role in fostering inclusive engagement between the state and its citizens.
These modern structures do more than house officials; they stand as embodiments of resilience and renewal. Prestage Murima, Deputy Chief of Mission of IOM Somalia, noted, “These modern facilities not only enhance the operational capacity of these vital ministries but also symbolize our commitment to bolstering institutional strength and restoring public trust in newly recovered areas of Somalia.”
The project is more than bricks and mortar. It includes a comprehensive drainage system to safeguard against flooding, beautiful landscaping to encourage accessibility, and fully furnished offices ready to serve the community year-round. Each detail has been meticulously planned, reflecting a deep-seated commitment to the well-being of the South West State’s citizens.
Delivered under IOM’s Rapid Stabilization Support to Somalia (RSS) programme, this initiative complements another significant programme, Nabadaynta Soomaaliya. Together, they work to create safer and stronger communities by enabling dialogue and co-creating solutions for local challenges.
As one explores the broader implications, a thought-provoking question emerges: How do these development efforts ripple through the fabric of society, sowing seeds of peace? It’s in the hope of addressing such profound inquiries that these buildings were erected—not just as shelters for government bodies but as beacons of hope and trust.
The project seamlessly melds ambition with action. It emphasizes the role of justice and security as cornerstones of peace and institutional resilience—a central theme in Somalia’s journey toward sustainable peace and development. These facilities are poised to contribute significantly to the stabilization and growth of the region.
