Condemning Violence: A Call for Humanitarian Respect in Sudan

the coalition articulated in a heartfelt joint statement. The weight of their message resonates globally, echoing the shared grief over the loss of five humanitarians and the destruction of essential supplies.
A Dark Night in North Darfur
Monday night was marred by tragedy near El Koma, a town in Sudan’s North Darfur province. The convoy, a brave undertaking by the World Food Programme and UNICEF, was making its arduous journey to El Fasher, a mission designed to bring hope to a much-needed area. The journey spanned over 1,800 kilometers from Port Sudan, aiming to deliver critical nutrition and food supplies.
“This horrendous act of violence is devastating,”
conveyed UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, capturing the global sentiment during a press briefing from New York.
Several trucks from the convoy were lost to flames, along with critical humanitarian supplies—supplies that were supposed to be a ray of hope for El Fasher, a place untouched by UN aid for over a year. Negotiations had been actively pursued with local authorities to ensure the convoy’s safe passage. Yet, the dark shadow of uncertainty lingers as the identities of the assailants remain unknown, with rival factions in Sudan exchanging blame for this heinous act.
The Context of Conflict
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal civil war. The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has left millions displaced, with stories of ethnic violence and mass sexual violence, especially prevalent in Darfur, adding unbearable weight to an already heavy crisis.
In a poignant statement, the ALPS coalition emphasized that any attack on civilians, aid workers, and humanitarian assets stands as a grave violation of international humanitarian law. “We urgently reiterate the need for full respect of international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel,”
stressed the coalition. They called for unfettered humanitarian access, highlighting the indispensability of aid for survival amidst the unfolding humanitarian crisis.
