Ex-President Sharif Sheikh Critiques President Mohamud on Election Viability and Displacement Issues
Mogadishu (AX) — Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed did not hold back on Saturday, sharply critiquing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. He raised serious doubts about the viability of the planned one-person, one-vote elections given the persistent security threats and condemned the government’s harsh evictions in Mogadishu.
Ahmed asserted that the dire security situation in Somalia renders individual voting unfeasible. He accused President Hassan Sheikh of pushing this electoral plan more for personal advantage than for the nation’s stability.
He pointed to the dire circumstances in neighborhoods such as Heliwaa and Kahda, where residents face relentless risks from Al-Shabaab, as clear evidence that the government’s ambition for individual voting is both impractical and misguided.
The former president further expressed his discontent with President Hassan Sheikh’s recent appeal to the Parliament to postpone their recess. He labeled this move as an inappropriate expansion of executive authority.
Additionally, Ahmed criticized the government’s management of land issues in Mogadishu, specifically referencing a violent confrontation in Ex-Control Afgoye, where residents were forcibly removed from their homes.
“It’s truly devastating to witness what transpired at Ex-Control Afgoye,” Ahmed remarked. “Young men who have dedicated their lives to serve this nation should not have to see their families uprooted. Where exactly have the lands taken from them been allocated?”
