At least six countries in the Horn of Africa to be hit by heightened heat stress

NAIROBI, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) — The mercury’s set to rise, amping up those sweltering conditions in multiple Horn of Africa nations, relayed by the Climate Prediction and Applications Center (ICPAC) of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), dropping knowledge this Wednesday.
In its freshest outlook, ICPAC signaled that at least half a dozen countries should prep for the heat spike.
“Expect precautionary heat stress levels sweeping across most of Sudan and South Sudan, alongside portions of Eritrea, Ethiopia, central and southern Somalia, and those northwestern and eastern stretches of Kenya,” aired ICPAC.
Sizzling 38 degrees Celsius temps are on the horizon for some of these areas, with the likelihood of the mercury shooting above average in much of the Greater Horn of Africa in upcoming weeks, ICPAC’s warning clarion rang out.
Climate quirks are becoming the norm, from baking hot spells to shocking downpours, catalyzed by climate change gripping the Horn of Africa.
The United Nations’ crop and chow unit, FAO, along with IGAD, pointed out wild weather happenings, throwing food security into jeopardy, setting some 67 million souls on a hunger watchlist in the Horn.
The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs delivered the grim news: 49 billion U.S. dollars, that’s the jaw-dropping tally needed to rescue some 187 million folks worldwide crying out for humanitarian lifelines. ■
