Somalia: Mogadishu Landmine Explosion Claims Three Lives, Injures Several Others

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Tragedy has struck in Mogadishu’s Karaan neighborhood as a landmine detonation claimed the lives of three individuals and injured several others on Saturday, as relayed by local informants to Axadle.

This IED went off in the El Ali Gedi sector, sending shockwaves across surrounding neighborhoods. Yet, who was meant to be the target? That puzzle remains unsolved.

While security forces in the Karaan district have combed the area post-event, no individuals have been apprehended. Despite no group stepping up to take responsibility, the attack bears hallmark traits of al-Shabab, infamous for such assaults in Somalia.

Just ahead of the blast, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, Somalia’s Minister of Internal Security, joined key police and intelligence figures on overnight patrols. Their goal? To tighten the security noose in Mogadishu, a city grappling with unyielding violence.

This grim event again underlines Mogadishu’s shaky security climate, where civilians too frequently find themselves amid blasts and gunfire.

Interestingly, this attack unfolded just as the Turkish research vessel Oruc Reis docked at Mogadishu’s harbor. Their mission? To probe beneath the waves for oil and natural gas off Somalia’s coast.
