According to a report by NGO Save The Children published earlier this month, the number of women settling with their partner without being married is increasing. In Sierra Leone, this cohabitation home has a name: “Tap To Me”. However, this phenomenon clashes with certain sensitivities in the country.
“My body, my decision, my rights” is the title of the latest report from NGO Save The Children. He reveals that many women, mostly pregnant, have settled with their partners in recent years, without addressing the issue of marriage or dowry.
Pastors and imams express their concerns, such as Sheikh Ay Kallay, an imam and teacher at Islamic Online University in Sierra Leone.
Teenage Pregnancies As Muslims, we cannot accept this phenomenon called “Tap To Me”. Do you want my daughter? She will not come to your house until the marriage; you must give the woman dowry. What is it about? A house? Kor? You have to say it in public. And if you have not respected the deadline, the family and the religious will say to you, “Lord, why did you not respect the woman’s right?” The law prescribed by the Almighty God himself. We do not quarrel with it. ”
According to the NGO report, the growing practice of “Tap To Me” is explained by teenage pregnancies, which are stigmatized in their families. They therefore settle with their partner, to get around the shame of not being married and avoid a forced marriage.
