Mogadishu (AX) — On a pivotal Sunday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud threw open the doors to the National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting at the grand presidential palace. The gathering aims to delve into pivotal issues: security, the path of nation-building, and the ever-critical subject of elections.
As the meeting reconvened, it was against the backdrop of rocky relations between the federal government and regional powers. Leaders from Northeastern State and Jubbaland were noticeably absent, choosing to remain on the sidelines of the NCC.
The dialogue had originally kicked off on October 2 but hit a roadblock when Jubbaland’s President, Ahmed Madobe, exited the discussions. His departure was rooted in concerns over the sidelining of Northeastern State and Khatumo regions, which he viewed as a threat to the integrity of the electoral process.
Madobe’s no-show today highlights these simmering tensions, as Northeastern State’s President, Said Abdullahi Deni, also continues his boycott, raising additional hurdles to federal aspirations of binding regional states to the council’s mission.
Present at this crucial session are Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre, Deputy Prime Minister Saleh Jama, President Abdazis Hassan Mohamed Lafta-garen of Southwest State, President Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qorqor) from Galmudug, President Ali Abdullahi Hussein Guudlawe of Hirshabelle, along with Mogadishu Mayor Sheikh Yusuf Hussein Jimale.
This marks the NCC’s tenth assembly since President Mohamud stepped into office in 2022, reflecting a dogged commitment to enhancing Somalia’s frameworks of governance and election systems.
