MOGADISHU, Somalia – President Deni announced that people from the southwestern state living in Northeastern State have the right to participate in the election as voter registration is taking place in three districts.
While participating in the FGS-FMS election talks in Mogadishu, Deni said that his government would not leave any stone unchanged to ensure that Somalis fleeing from the south under different circumstances will cast their votes.
“I am very happy that the Somali people who came to Northeastern State from different parts of the country during the conflict and became part of the local population will be free to participate in the forthcoming elections,” he said.
The Northeastern State president added that every Somali citizen in his federal state has the right to vote in the constituency in which he or she lives and to choose the future leaders who will influence his or her life.
Deni described this as a positive step and remarkable progress for the people of Northeastern State who have shown generosity and hospitality to their brothers and sisters fleeing drought and increasing insecurity in the south.
“I urge the people to work for development and security in Northeastern State because they have prospered, worked, lived, given birth to children here and they will live in the future and have the right to vote for leaders.
Deni’s remarks come when a voter registration exercise is going smoothly in the Qardho, Eyl and Ufeyn districts for local elections in the first democratic vote in Northeastern State since it began in 1998.
As part of the cornerstones of democratization, Northeastern State in northeastern Somalia launched the multi-party system, which is expected to move the oil-rich federal state out of the protracted clan-based electoral process.
