On Tuesday in Abuja, during the summit of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari launched a wide-ranging appeal for support for the Transitional Military Council in Chad.

as reported from Abuja, Mois Gomis

For the first time in its history, the Lake Chad Basin Commission dedicated a summit on the political and security situation in one of its member states. Nigeria, host country, welcomed Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Libya, Niger and of course Chad. These six member states were surrounded by Sudan and Algeria, which have not yet ratified their commitment. And among the observers, in particular the African Union and ECOWAS.

No fake note during this extraordinary summit in Abuja. All the presidents of the organization’s members formed a body around General Mahamat Idriss Déby, the president of the Transitional Military Council. If Paul Biya was represented in Cameroon, Mohammed Younès Menfi, who was recently elected head of the Libyan Presidency, was present.

Hosting the summit as the current president of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, Muhammadu Buhari “insisted on the urgent need to support the transition in Chad for the balance of the Lake Chad region but also the Sahel.” The Nigerian head of state recalled that support for the Transitional Military Council should not exceed the 18 months of this body’s life. And he also explained that the Chadian constitution must be respected as the guarantor of the country’s social contract.

Note that it floated as a return to the time before Covid-19 as it is a non-virtual summit led by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in the plush lounges of one of the largest hotels in Abuja. But a rare image taken shows the six heads of state and government sitting in a circle at least a meter away. And everyone was well masked.
