The Premier League player of the month nominated for March has been revealed, with Tottenham’s Harry Kane will battle it out with Ryad Mahrez, Luke Shaw and Jesse Lingard among an eight-player shortlist.

Nominees are usually announced early the following month, but when the Premier League breaks for international play until April 3, March elections have come in a little early.

Kane earns a spot on the shortlist for a number of impressive performances, but deserved it because of his Crystal Palace master class alone. He scored two goals and helped two more when Spurs dismantled Roy Hodgson’s team.

Lingard’s latest form for West Ham gave him his first England hat in almost two years on Thursday night and he could be in line for more recognition here. He only played twice in March, but was involved in a 2-0 victory against Leeds and then in his side’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Arsenal, where he took apart the Gunners in a fierce first half.

Shaw has meanwhile re-established himself as Manchester United’s first choice, while Mahrez scored three goals in three games for City as they strengthened their lead at the top of the Premier League.

There is also room on the shortlist for Leicester’s Kelechi Iheanacho, who netted in each of Leicester’s matches last month and signed the break with an astonishing hat-trick against Sheffield United.

Other nominees include Leeds Illan Meslier, Brighton’s Leandro Trossard and Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen.
