French leaders of Amesys and Nexa Technologies are accused of participating in an act of torture for the sale of surveillance equipment to Egypt and Libya. This follows a complaint from the International Federation for Human Rights and The League of Human Rights.
To date, four men, former directors or still in office, have been prosecuted by investigating judges suspected of delivering two authoritarian regimes and deliberately using material surveillance to detect opponents, then imprisoned and tortured. Several victims joined as a civilian party.
The first legal information concerns the sale between 2007 and 2011, in the middle of the “Arab Spring”, of computer systems that make it possible to control the messages exchanged online. A sale concluded by the Amesys company with Libya by Muammar Gadhafi.
A huge step forward for associations
The other information concerns the sale in 2014 of a listening system to Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s regime. A contract signed between Egypt and the company Nexa Technologie, which is managed by former directors of Amesys, which has since changed its name.
The associations that had lodged a complaint against these French companies and their leaders underline enormous progress and also call on the government to take all measures to prevent the export of surveillance technology to countries that seriously violate human rights.
