The British Embassy and Hormuud sign new Chevening partnership to enable more future Somali leaders to study in the UK

MOGADISHU (AXADLE) The British Embassy in Mogadishu and Hormuud has today signed a new Chevening partnership to enable more future Somali leaders to study in the UK.

The British Embassy says “We are pleased to announce today a new Chevening Scholarship partnership with the Hormuud Salaam Foundation, to enable more aspiring Somali future leaders to study for a master’s degree at world – class universities in the UK.”

The partnership will support outstanding individuals to gain the academic skills, experience and networking so that they can contribute to Somalia’s continued development. This partnership provides funding for two additional Chevening researchers each year for the next three academic years to take advantage of this highly competitive, life-changing opportunity.

The partnership was announced at a welcome event at the home of ten of the twelve 2020/21 Somali Chevening researchers who hosted the British Ambassador to Somalia, Kate Foster. The CEO of the Hormuud Salaam Foundation, Abdullahi Nur Osman, the head of the British office Hargeisa, Lizzie Walker and Chevening alumni also attended. During the event, the returning scholars shared their experiences and plans for the future.

The British Ambassador to Somalia, Kate Foster, said at the event: “The Chevening program attracts the best and most talented from around the world, enabling outstanding new leaders to make a significant contribution to society when they return home.

“I am particularly pleased to announce our new partnership with the Hormuud Salaam Foundation, to support more aspiring Chevening researchers to take advantage of this opportunity. Through partnerships like these, future Somali leaders are better able to realize their potential and work. to build a better, brighter and more prosperous future for Somalia. ”

The CEO of the Hormuud Salaam Foundation, Abdullahi Nur Osman, said:

“Somalia has one of the youngest populations on earth with so much budding potential. We are proud to support some of our best and most talented, enabling them to study at one of the best institutions in the UK.”

This partnership will support researchers pursuing master’s degrees in any of the following fields at any accredited university in the UK: Marketing Management, Journalism / Mass Communication / Strategic Communication, Human Resource Management, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Data Science, Asset Management, Investment Management and Petroleum Engineering .

Chevening Scholarships is the UK Government’s Global Scholarship Program. These scholarships were established in 1983 and support studies at UK universities – mostly one-year master’s degrees – for students with demonstrable potential to become future leaders, decision-makers and opinion makers.

Since 2016, the Chevening Scholarship program has enabled more than 70 talented Somalis to take advantage of this educational opportunity, some of whom now work at senior levels in government, the private sector and international organizations.
